Since 2019, I have been photographing the series Net. At the time, I was living in Hangzhou, and with the Asian Games scheduled for 2022, the city was in the midst of intense construction. It was in this environment that the green nets began appearing one after another across various sites, and this became the impetus for starting this project.
In that same year, the spread of COVID-19 overlapped with the onset of the U.S. and China trade war, casting a shadow of uncertainty over the many construction projects that had been progressing at a rapid pace.
Now, roughly six years later, many of the places once covered by nets have grown over with vegetation, while in other locations high-rise buildings now stand in their place.
These nets are like a magician’s cloth: when they are spread across the land, what eventually appears once they are lifted is something no one can predict.
